Microsoft has rolled out a free Windows 11 upgrade to around 500 million Windows 10 users, inviting them to make the switch ahead of time before support for Windows 10 officially ends on 14 October 2025. The initiative is aimed at allowing users to have continued access to security updates, compatibility features, and enhanced functionality. The promotion is available for eligible devices that qualify under Windows 11’s hardware requirements.
The company is encouraging users with compatible systems to start the upgrade process to ensure uninterrupted service. Those who do not upgrade by the end-of-support date will be running their devices without additional updates or technical support. This would result in compromised performance and higher exposure to threats.
For customers who have older equipment that is not compatible with Windows 11’s requirements, Microsoft has launched an extended support for 12 months. At a cost of $30, this paid option offers extra time to get ready. It is particularly beneficial for enterprises or individuals requiring extra time to ready their systems or finances.
Microsoft has also implemented technical changes that block unofficial ways of circumventing system requirements for Windows 11. These limitations are designed to safeguard system reliability and minimize opportunities for malfunction or vulnerabilities. In the past, bypasses enabled certain users to get Windows 11 installed on unsupported systems, but such bypasses have since been eliminated to ensure uniform performance standards across systems.
This upgrade initiative is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to simplify its operating system products and maintain consistency on user systems. As Windows 10 is reaching its end-of-support lifecycle, the firm wants users to gain from the latest features and enhanced support available in Windows 11.
Upgraders are recommended to verify their device compatibility using Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool. Users should also backup critical data before installation. Upgrading to Windows 11 allows people and organisations to keep receiving technical support, software compatibility, and updates from Microsoft.
This move is a significant milestone in Microsoft’s current OS policy, aligning its products with newer software standards and support schedules.
